On February 12, 2025, Correction Officers Santos Barbosa, Aisha Stanislaus, and Diego Perez received the 2024 Corrections USA Valor Award at the Corrections USA Annual Valor Awards Dinner. The officers were recognized for their bravery and courage demonstrated in the course of their duties. Each year, Corrections USA honors Correction Officers from across the United States, who have demonstrated acts of valor both on and off duty.
Correction Officers Barbosa and Stanislaus heroically jumped into action to help resuscitate a baby, who was choking on a Dorito chip and in medical distress while at the visitor’s room at RNDC last year. Officer Stanislaus first noticed the baby was choking and attempted the Heimlich Maneuver. Officer Barbosa then performed CPR compressions on the one-year old baby several times and was finally able to dislodge the chip and stabilize the baby until an ambulance arrived.
Correction Officer Perez valiantly fought off an inmate last year at OBCC, who was stabbing him with a glass shank in an unprovoked attack. Despite sustaining serious stab wounds to his head and face, Officer Perez was able to quell the attack and prevent other officers from being attacked as well.
COBA was very proud to join Correction Officers Barbosa, Stanislaus and Perez at this prestigious event and we salute them for their outstanding service to our agency. They embody the very best qualities of NYC’s Boldest! We thank CUSA Chairman Jim Baiardi and the entire CUSA Board for recognizing our brave NYC Correction Officers every year at this event.
